LYING, STEALING, AND MURDERING (An Introduction)
The three basic roots of sin are nothing new and nothing complicated. They have been around since near the beginning of the world. And these three basic roots have been a plague upon mankind from the beginning … from the first sin in the garden of Eden to this very day. The enemy of Life has used three simple roots to keep all mankind in bondage and in ignorance, and it servitude to his wicked government—and wants to do so for as long as he can. Ever since the serpent successfully tempted Eve to disobey God, mankind has willingly become the servant of sin—to his own demise.
If we have any doubt about where the source of sin comes from we have only to turn to Jesus’ for his precise testimony on the subject.
John 10:10
The thief [who is Satan, a.k.a. the Devil] cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:
I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. [The “they” is referring to you and I.]
John 8:44-48
“Ye” are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
The “YE” is referring to the religious leaders planning on trapping Yeshua so that can legally kill him. YE is the old plural form of “you”.]
He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own:
for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin?
And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God’s words:
ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
John 10:10
The thief [who is Satan, a.k.a. the Devil] cometh not,
but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:
I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
[The “they,” is referring to you and I.]
John 8:44-48
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
[Background note: The religious leaders were preparing to murder Yeshua.]
He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
[In other words, Satan did not abide in, dwell in, live in, or walk in the Truth.
Satan lived in lies. He taught others his lies, keeping them in bondage to him.]
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own:
for he is a liar, and the father of it. [In other words, Satan is the source of all lies.]
And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
[Why is that? Because they were walking in agreement with Satan.
No man can serve two masters. We have to choose One.]
Which of you convinceth me of sin?
[No one could convict or condemn Yeshua, because He Lived without Sin.
Yeshua was murdered for telling His people the Truth about Himself.
Because they believed Yeshua was a liar, and a blasphemer.]
And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
[No one can truly hear the Truth, while they are listening to lies. The two are mutually
exclusive. Again, no man can serve two masters. We must choose One.]
He that is of God heareth God’s words:
[When you hear God’s Words and obey them exclusively, you Live without Sin,
because He lives His Life through You. You Live inside of Him, and He in YOU.
You both become One, and you cannot sin.]
ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
[Not hearing God is a serious indictment. Let it not be true of us.]
Cannot Sin …
The apostle John, one of Yeshua’s closest friends, tells us who it is that cannot sin:
1 John 3:9
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him:
and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
1 John 5:18-19
We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not;
but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself,
and that wicked one toucheth him not.
And we know that we are of God,
and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
[In other words, the whole world is run by the governments of men, who are ruled over by their leader, the devil, who teaches men how to rule in wickedness, and sin, and selfishness. And this is why the Messiah has come, to teach men how to rule by the government of God, which is not based on lies, but works in accordance with the truth, following The one true God, by doing the will of the Father. Very soon Jesus will come and cast out the ruler of this world. Then he will set up his own government, that is the hope, and the solid solemn promise of the gospel.]
THE VERY FIRST SIN
In order to solve a difficult problem it is the best to begin at the root of the problem. Go back to its source. Address its original failure. That is what the gospel does.
So here’s a simple little breakdown of the first sin committed in the Bible, which is the first sin committed by anyone in the human race.
Before the very first sin, all mankind was innocent, and blameless before God, and living without sin. They were living in perfect harmony with God, perfect harmony with each other, and perfect harmony within themselves. They were naked and still they were not ashamed. They had nothing to fear. Nothing to hide. Nothing to worry about. Nothing infect or poison their relationship with one another, with God, with all of Creation. They had no debts. No sickness, nor disease. No wars. No death. No reason to argue or fight, or to be unpleasant in any way—in the presence of God. Just perfect beauty surrendered them inside and out. Then something evil happened.
It all began one day in the most beautiful garden you could ever imagine. There, Elohim (God—the Hebrew word for God is plural) planted trees with lush fruit of every kind imaginable. A garden planted by the Lord of all creation and watered by a river of life, and the dew of heaven. Every animal was happy, content, well fed, healthy, and gracefully interacting with every other animal. At this time there were no carnivores.
Can you see it? Can you believe it? This is what Yahweh intended all of His children to experience. This perfection is going to be restored, according to the prophecy by Isaiah the Prophet:
Isaiah 11:6-9
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling [a stall fed calf about a year old] together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking [nursing, young] child shall play on the hole of the asp [poisonous deadly snake], and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den [a cockatrice is a viper with thrusting or hissing tongue, a.k.a. adder]. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
Someday soon this world and Isaiah chapter 11 shall be restored.
Living in the Garden without Sin
This garden YAHWEH prepared for his perfectly formed son, whom he created from dust of the earth, and his one and only daughter, whom he created from Adam’s rib. He brought them together, fully formed, fully mature, fully imbedded with consciousness, genius, unpolluted minds, and a fully operational language. He gave them everything they needed for their own pleasure and a joyous relationship with Him and all creation. He joined them pronouncing them, Husband and Wife, and made them to be joined into Holy Matrimony, to become one flesh, serving one another unselfishly, under His Perfect Leadership.
The Garden of Eden was their wedding present, and the Entire World was their Family inheritance. This inheritance they were intended to pass on to their children for many generations. They were to pass it on under the blessing of their faithful covenant relationship with the Glorious Creator of All. They were to pass on His Wisdom, His Grace, His Kindness and Mercy, and His Love, as they witnessed it from Yahweh themselves (that is called discipleship). They were intended and commissioned to share his goodness and glory among themselves and with every future generation. Just as we are commissioned to do so in the gospel of Yeshua Messiah.
The entire Earth was designed to be filled with the Glory of God. Filled with His nature, His Goodness, and His Life. Adam and Eve were to be trained to live underneath the Blessing of His Government, His Holiness, under His direct supervision.
Yahweh’s Entire Being, was his greatest gift given to his own children. They were to be receivers of his glory, and wisdom, and righteousness. By living with Him, and enjoying His Presence and Majesty, they would learn by example, and by daily interaction, which is far beyond our ability to describe. They knew YAHWEH was the center of all Life and Truth and Love.
Every blessing, every favor, every honor, every treasure Yahweh had to share with Adam and Eve was given to them freely through the Nature of Yahweh’s whole Being. Yahweh was filled with honesty, with true speaking, with true doing, with true planning and true executing of plans.
Every thing Yahweh said, He did—for He could not do otherwise. His word was His bond. All His actions were perfect. All His Words were flawless. All His thoughts were a revelation. In Him there was no division. No pollution. No strife. No uncertainty. No impurity. Everyone could trust, believe, and obey every word that proceeded out of His mouth, and never be ashamed.
As far as I know, Yahweh only gave his children 3 commands:
- Be fruitful and multiply.
- Rule over the Earth. (In other words: Govern, Steward, Manage—Take care of her.)
- Do not eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of God and Evil. For the day you eat of it, you shall surely die (the first commandment with a consequence attached to it).
With these commandments in mind let us jump right into Genesis 3—The Fall of Mankind.
In Genesis 3 we are introduced to a curious figure named, “the Serpent”. He was an actual animal, with arms and legs, and had apparently quite a shrewd mind. And apparently, he had become an agent of the Devil and was coached by Satan to tempt Eve into disobeying, rebelling, sinning against God. , and was brought into the garden to plant a seed of evil doubt into the heart of Eve.
One day the servant of Satan, the serpent, approached EVE and engaged her in a deceptive conversation…
Now, we have set the stage, we are ready to address the first of the three routes of sin. The root of lying.
I will hopefully address this in the next chapter/post: lying, the first root of sin.
