How much of the Bible is
Dedicated to Prophecy?

[You might be surprised]

Virtually, one out of every four pages in the Bible is dedicated to prophecy, or prophetic material.

Approximately 26–27% of the Bible is made up of prophecy, specifically predictive prophecy. This estimate comes from counts such as J. Barton Payne’s Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy, which identifies 1,817 prophecies within 8,352 verses out of the Bible’s 31,124 total verses—amounting to about 26.8% of the entire text25678910. Some sources round this number to 27% or note a range up to one third, but the prevailing scholarly consensus supports the 26–27% figure.

  • These prophecies include predictions about future events, many of which are described as already fulfilled, with others still waiting to be fulfilled..

  • [] for example,
  • The remainder of the Bible contains history, law, poetry, wisdom, narrative, and other genres.

Some theological perspectives may argue that all of Scripture carries prophetic significance in a broader or typological sense, but based on a straightforward count of actual predictions concerning the future, about one quarter to just over one fourth of the Bible qualifies as prophecy.
