If I have a “Single Eye”?
22 The light of the body is the eye:
if therefore thine eye be single,
thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil,
thy whole body shall be full of darkness.
If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness,
how great is that darkness!

Jesus, the One Who is “The Light of the World,” is One who is qualified, to teach me (and all his students) about the Light in my Body.
John 8:12 (KJV) 12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
No one else has a higher qualification than Yeshua, the Hebrew Messiah, to teach me about His Light.
Did you know that even today, with all our modern technology, science doesn’t know what LIGHT is? (The same is true for GRAVITY, MAGNETISM, they don’t know what these are. Yes, they have discovered some principles that appear to govern the general use of this things, that can be observed, but they still don’t know what they are. I find this subject fascinating. Light has many properties. And it also has many applications.
- Light makes things visible (see-able)
- Light makes things clear, understandable, desirable,
- Light exposes things that were in the darkness (both spiritually, and
By my reckoning: Yeshua was there in the Beginning. He is the One who created “The Light” on “Day One of Creation” (See: John 1:1-5), He being the Very Word of God, when He Himself spoke Light into Existence:
Genesis 1:3-5 (KJV)
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Yeshua is also the One who created the Son, Moon, Stars, and the whole Celestial Array, the natural light He created is with us every single day, during this time or epoch in :

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
And Yeshua, will be there in the End, after the complete cleansing of the world, and the creation of the New Heavens and the New Earth. He will be the Light in the Holy City:

23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Not only is Yeshua the Light in the Beginning, and at the End, but he has been the Light shining throughout the ages. He is brilliantly Shining even today, even right now, to those who have Eyes to See. When they do see Him their whole Body will be filled with His Light, and no part darkness.

6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Ezekiel 12:1-2 (KJV)
1 The word of the LORD also came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not:
for they are a rebellious house.
If the Light in you is darkness,
How great is that darkness?
Apparently, “the eye” of the people in Ezekiel’s day, was not single, but folded, multifaceted, having a divided perception, a duplicitous mindset, a variable path, a scattered attention, a diverted and diluted vision.
Deuteronomy 29:2-29 (KJV)
2 And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; 3 The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles: 4 Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
Mark This Down: An exceptionally important point: Many say if I only would see the miracles, then I would believe. Not So. History condemns that notion. Many in Moses’s Day ALL saw the Mighty Miracles of God, yet that entire adult generation, because of their unbelief and forthright Rebellion to the Word of God–They all perished in the Desert. Why? Because their belief in God was a pretend belief. True Biblical Heavenly Belief in God always translated into Faithful, Actual, Concrete Obedience to God’s Commandments. And Faith one has in God and doesn’t include Obeying God’s Commandments, Doing God’s Word, Living Out the Precept of Heaven, and the Eternal Law of God, are null and void, in the Kingdom of Heaven. Any faith that includes disregard to the King of Heaven, is rejected by God. Only that which is forged in the furnace of action, and active disciplined obedience to the very explicit details of God’s Word and God’s Commandments, creates a state of faithlessness, and rebellion and judgement against those who break God’s Covenant.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE “SINGLE” EYE AND THE “EVIL” EYE?

We find this contrast twice in Scripture:
- Matthew 6:22-23: “[22] The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. [23] But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!”
- Luke 11:34-36: “[34] The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. [35] Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. [36] If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.”
The “light” can be understood as a lamp. Through the physical eye, the physical body is aware of its surroundings. If we take this and apply it to the spiritual realm, we understand the spiritual eye allows the spiritual body to be aware of its environment. The “single eye” refers to a clear eye that has one image in view as opposed to double vision. It is good because it sees reality instead of an illusion. The single eye sees truth. On the other hand, the “evil eye” is the bad or deceived eye. It is not focused on one image but a combination of images, which is nothing but error, fleshliness (carnality), and worldliness. Such vision—as in the physical world, so in the spiritual world—will lead to confusion and disorientation.
We find two other references to the “evil eye” in Scripture. One is Matthew 20:15: “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?” The other is Mark 7:22, the “evil eye” being one of the sins proceeding from man’s wicked heart: “Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:….” If you read the context of the Matthew verse, you will see the “evil eye” refers to materialism (greediness, envy). Also, see Matthew 6:19-34, which is the context of the verse cited at the beginning of this study. It too issues the following warning: no one can serve God and mammon (wealth deified or idolized).
By mentioning the “single” eye and the “evil” eye, the Lord Jesus Christ advises Israel to receive the spiritual light He is providing them during His earthly ministry. Remember, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path…. The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:105,130). However, apostate Israel is in unbelief, and is content to be in spiritual darkness. Satan’s evil world system has distracted them from the truth, God’s words to them. They refuse to hear, see, and believe. This is applicable not only to the nation Israel as a whole, but also individual Jews who reject Jesus as Messiah/Christ. They failed to appreciate Him because they were notthinking properly. Consequently, they murdered Him on Calvary’s cross!
While not written to or about us, the doctrine contained herein is transdispensational. It is true in any and every age, for Satan’s policy of evil is always designed to sidetrack people from listening to and believing God’s revelation to them. Brethren, may we have a “single” eye in this the Dispensation of the Grace of God—rightly dividing the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15), understanding the Apostle Paul is Jesus Christ’s spokesman to us (Romans 11:13), heeding and trusting Romans through Philemon. Otherwise, we have an “evil” eye…and darkness…and confusion…and disorientation…and Christendom (Christendumb)!
